Mata (Mother)Traders is a company founded on a simple premise: that buying power is a chance to make a difference.  Fair Trade organizations like Mata Traders offer an opportunity for economic advancement to women in poverty that is truly a rarity. Being a part of the fair trade community (either as a producer, retailer, or consumer) means that we are ALL connected to this opportunity for positive change. 

As co-owners of Mata Traders, Michelle and Maureen work with organizations that educate, employ, and empower women. Spending time with these groups has helped them realized that even the most traditional women, when given the opportunity, thrive in an atmosphere of meaningful work that is outside their homes and families.

They have also learned that equality in the workplace IS possible - even in a country as socially stratified as India.  Whether a beginner sewer or the marketing director, all the women that make Mata Trader’s clothing and accessories have a voice.
